[19 mm] above the burner.<\/li>\n<li>Start the flame impact timer and expose the specimen for 12 \u00b1 0.2 s. Observe whether the sample melts or drips during exposure to the flame.<\/li>\n<li>Immediately after removing the flame, start a timer to measure the afterflame and afterglow time.<\/li>\n<li>Observe how long the sample continues to burn after the exposure time of 12 s. Record the time after the flame with an accuracy of 0.2 s.<\/li>\n<li>Note how long the sample continues to glow after the afterglow ceases or after the flame is removed if there is no afterglow. Record this afterglow time to the nearest 0.2 s.<\/li>\n<li>Remove the sample holder from the test cabinet. Turn on the hood ventilation to clean the test cabinet for gases and smoke. Allow the sample to cool down.<\/li>\n<li>Make a crease by folding the sample along a line through the peak of the highest charred area and parallel to the sides of the sample.<\/li>\n<li>Pierce the specimen with the hook approximately 0.25 in. [6 mm] from the bottom edge and from the side edge of the specimen.<\/li>\n<li>Attach a mass weight sufficient to give a combined mass of the weight with the hook that results in the proper tear force. Refer to Table 1 to determine the designated total tear strength for fabrics of different bases.<\/li>\n<li>Apply the tear force as follows. Attach the corner of the swatch to the opposite bottom edge of the fabric from where the hook and weight are attached. Lift the sample up in a smooth, continuous motion until the sample supports the full tearing force. Note any fabric tears in the charred area of \u200b\u200bthe sample.
