Functions of accredited laboratories and notified bodies
How can we be sure that our fabrics and/or protective garments actually provide the protection against the risks indicated in the technical data sheets?
This is the role of accredited laboratories and notified bodies, which certify fabrics/garments according to the standards applicable to the type of protection they offer.
In the case of fabrics, accredited laboratories – impartial and neutral entities – carry out all the necessary tests to verify that the fabric being marketed complies with the applicable standards and, therefore, provides the protection stated in the manufacturer’s technical data sheet. If the fabric meets the requirements, the laboratory issues a certificate and a test report.
Generally, UNE standards require certification of the fabric in its original state and/or after 5 washing and drying cycles according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Additionally, the fabric/garment may also be certified for a different number of washing and drying cycles.
To ensure the quality of the fabric, these official laboratory reports must be carried out periodically to keep the EN,ISO,ASTM and NFPA certificates valid and up to date.
Depending on the country where the certificate is used, its validity may differ, so it is important to renew these certificates periodically to avoid them becoming obsolete.
Depending on the certified standard and its classification/level (if any), the fabric will offer greater or lesser degrees of protection.
In our technical data sheets, you will find the standards under which our fabrics have been certified as well as the test and/or requirement standards.
In the case of garments, the notified body is responsible for ensuring the performance of the garment being marketed. There are different ways to certify garments depending on the category of the PPE. The two most commonly used methods are Module C2 and Module D.
At Lenard, our Quality Department ensures that our technical data sheets are kept up to date so that when our clients certify their garments, they can provide this information to the accredited laboratory.
We invite you to visit our website www.lenard.tech, where you can consult the technical data sheets for all our fabrics. In addition, we also offer a line of officially certified protective knitted garments to support our garment-making clients.
