OBJECT

This standard specifies the protection values that garments and fabrics must comply with against the thermal risks of an electric arc. The protection levels can be used according to the following standards: Open Arc EN 61482-1-1 which records the values of arc rating [ELIM (Incident Energy Limit with No Probability of Burning), ATPV (Arc Thermal Performance Value) and/or EBT (Open Breaking Threshold Energy)] or Box Test EN 61482-1-2 in Class 1 (4 Ka) or Class 2 (7 Ka).

REQUIREMENTS

PRE-TREATMENT: 5 cycles according to manufacturer’s instructions (EN 6330/EN 15797)

CONDITIONING: 24 h at 20 ± 2 ºC and 65 ± 5% RH

TEST METHOD TEST STANDARD DESCRIPTION REQUIREMENTS
THERMAL ARC PROTECTION EN 61482-1-1 Pre-treated fabric

Open Arc, Open Arc for ELIM values; ATPV; EBT in cal/cm2

Informational value

ELIM and ATPV or Ebt must be provided

IEC 61482-1-2 Pre-treated fabric

Protective clothing against thermal hazards caused by an electric arc. Box Test. Classification of the level of protection according to the intensity of the arc

Class 1; APC1: 4 kA Class 2; APC2: 7 kA
LIMITED FLAME SPREAD ISO 15025 Pre-treated tissue: application of the flame perpendicular to the tissue (procedure A) Application flame 10” for pre-treated tissue: No specimens should ignite towards the top or to the edges, no formation of holes ≥ 5 mm, do not detach inflamed remains, post inflammation t ≤ 2”, post incandescence allowed within the charred area during the test.
VERTICAL ELECTRICAL RESISTANCE IEC 61340-2-3

or

EN 1149-2

Pre-treated fabric. Electrodes are placed on opposite surfaces of the material to be tested. A direct current voltage is applied to the electrodes and the vertical resistance of the material is determined. Volumetric strength > 105 Ω
HEAT RESISTANCE ISO 17493 Pre-treated fabric subjected to 180 ± 8ºC for 5 min ± 15 s Shrinkage ≤ 5% length/width at 180 ºC No layer can ignite or melt.
TENSILE STRENGTH ISO 13934-1 Pre-treated fabric. ≥ 250 N warp/weft (fabrics weighing ≤ 220 g/m2)

≥ 400 N warp/weft (fabrics weighing ≥ 220 g/m2)
