DEFINITION

This part of ISO 105 specifies a test method for determining the color fastness of textiles to the action of artificial light representative of natural daylight.

A specimen of the textile to be tested is exposed to artificial light under controlled conditions, together with a set of reference materials. Color fastness is assessed by comparing the color degradation of the sample with the reference materials used.

APPLIANCES

  • To carry out the test, an aging chamber in artificial light, xenotest equipment and an evaluation chamber for visual inspection are required.
  • Blue scale and gray scale
  • Equipment to measure humidity control
  • Black body temperature sensors.
  • Opaque lids for partial sample coverage.

SAMPLES

The test piece may consist of a strip of fabric, yarn wound next to each other or laid parallel and attached to a cardboard, or a strip of combed fibers compressed to provide a smooth surface and attached to a cardboard . The entire surface, exposed or unexposed, must not be less than 10 mm X 8 mm.

The caps should be in close contact with the surface of the unexposed areas of the test specimens and the blue graduation, to ensure a well-defined dividing line between the different exposed and unexposed areas, although they should not compress unnecessarily the test tube.

The test tubes to be tested and the samples of the blue scale must have the same size and shape, in order to avoid errors in evaluation, due to an excessive appreciation of the visual contrast between the exposed and unexposed parts in a larger pattern compared to a closer

METHOD

There are 5 test methods:

  • Method 1: This method is considered the most informative and should be used in the event of a dispute over the strength index. The basic principle is to control the exposure times by examination of the specimen and, therefore, a complete set of blue reference scales is necessary for each specimen tested. This method is particularly suitable for determining the color fastness to light on test specimens.
  • Method 2: This method can be used when a large number of samples must be tested simultaneously. The basic principle of this method is the control of the exposure time by the examination of the blue reference scales, which makes it possible to test samples of different resistance to light using a single set of scales. reference blues, reducing the number of supplies needed. . This method is particularly suitable in the dyeing industry.
  • Method 3: This test method is similar to Method 1, but is suitable for comparing specimen compliance to a known performance specification. The basic characteristic is the control of the specimen with a reduced number of reference blue scales, generally the target reference blue scale with the two reference blue scales which proceed to the target reference blue scale. In this way, it is possible to quantify the sample that does not meet the required performance specification. In this method, about one-third to two-thirds of the specimens and reference blue scales are covered with an opaque lid as needed.
  • Method 4: This method is similar to Method 1, but is designed to verify compliance with a previously agreed reference sample. The basic feature is the control of the exposure period by inspection of the previously agreed reference sample. It is possible to expose the specimens only with the reference sample without the presence of reference blue scales. This method is particularly suitable as a control method and allows many specimens to be compared with the same reference sample.
  • Method 5: This method is suitable for verifying compliance with previously agreed radiant energy levels. Exposure of test tubes alone or with blue reference scales is possible. Specimens should be exposed until the previously agreed amount of radiant energy is reached.

RESULTS

Light exposure is complete when tissue degradation is at grade 3 on the gray scale or grade 4 on the gray scale.
