DEFINITION

Pilling forms when fibers on the surface of a fabric straighten and tangle during wear. This is generally an undesirable surface deterioration, but the degree of consumer tolerance for a given level of pilling will depend on the type of garment and the general use of the fabric.

METHOD

A circular test piece on a rubbing surface made of the same fabric or, if necessary, of an abrasive wool fabric, is subjected to a defined force by describing a Lissajous curve with the test piece, capable of easily rotating around an axis that passes through its center, perpendicular to the plane of the specimen. Fuzz and pilling are evaluated visually after the defined steps in the test.

SAMPLES

The specimen to be placed in the specimen holder must be a disk of (140+5) mm in diameter. The test piece to be placed in the ball-forming plate can be (140+5) mm in diameter or (150 ± 2) mm in length and width, depending on the case.
A minimum of three sets of complete test tubes are necessary, since a complete set includes a test tube for the test tube holder and a test tube for the plate for the formation of pellets; also an additional test tube for comparative evaluation. In case of using the wool rubbing cloth on the pellet formation plate, at least three test tubes of the fabric under test are necessary for the test tube holders.
