PROTECTIVE CLOTHING AGAINST HEAT AND FLAME. DETERMINATION OF HEAT TRANSMISSION ON EXPOSURE TO A FLAME

  • DEFINITION

DEFINITION

This standard describes a method to determine the transmission of heat through materials or a combination of materials used in the protective layer.

This standard describes a method to determine the transmission of heat through materials or a combination of materials used in the protective layer.

METHOD

    • Sample conditioning: 24h 20ºC 65% RH
    • Test atmosphere: 23ºC 15-80% RH
    • The sample is placed, with the outer face facing downwards, on the sample holder
    • If the sample consists of more than one layer and the layers are not joined together, the successive layers are assembled in the order and orientation in which they are used in the assembly. The weight of the calorimeter positioning plate is used, without additional pressure, to keep each layer in contact with each other
    • After the last layer (the innermost one) is assembled, the positioning plate is reattached and the calorimeter is placed in the hole in the plate, so that the copper disc is in contact with the top of the innermost layer.
    • The lighter is quickly and smoothly moved into position and the shutter, if any, below the sample is immediately opened, or the sample is moved quickly over the flame. The recording device is started, simultaneously with the exposure of the sample to the flame of the lighter
    • The test is continued until a temperature increase of at least 24 °C is observed. The exhibition ends by removing the lighter
    • The time required in seconds to achieve a calorimeter temperature increase of 24°C is recorded

For each material or set of materials, a minimum of three samples will be tested.

SAMPLES AND APPARATUS

  • Test sample: Consists of all layers of fabric or other materials, arranged in the order and orientation used in practice, including underwear where appropriate. The sample should have dimensions of 140 mm + 140 mm, and should be taken more than 50 mm, from the edge of the material parts and in defect-free areas.
  • Incident Heat Flux Density, Q
  • Heat Transfer Index, HTI: (flame) mean time, tm rounded to the second, necessary to obtain a temperature increase of (24 ± 0.2) °C when tested by this method, using a copper disc of mass (18 ± 0.05) g and an incident heat flux of (80 ± 2) kW/m2, from a 95% propane burner flame.
