DEFINITION

This method is used to determine the vertical flame resistance of textiles.

The post-incandescence and post-combustion time after the burn is also assessed.

Standard definitions:

  • Afterflame, n: Persistent flame of a material after the ignition source has been removed.
  • after-flame time, the period of time during which a material continues to burn after the ignition source has been removed.
  • afterglow time, the time that afterglow continues after removal of the ignition source and cessation of flames.
  • char length, n: when measuring the flame resistance of textiles, the distance from the edge of the fabric, which is directly exposed to the flame, to the farthest point of visible damage to the fabric after a char has been applied specified tear strength.
  • flame application time, n: the time interval during which the ignition flame is applied to a material.
  • Melting – a liquefaction of the material under the influence of heat.

Definition of the method

  • This test method determines the response of textiles to a standard ignition source, deriving measurement values for after-flame time, time afterafterglowand the char lengthunder a specific force.
  • Vertical flame resistance, determined by this test method, only relates to a specified flame exposure and application time.
  • This test method holds the specimen in a static upright position, free of drafts, and involves no movement except that resulting from exposure.

As a minimum, the test samples used should be as homogeneous as possible.

APPARATUS

  • Burner equipped with a needle valve to regulate the height of the flame.
  • Gas mixture, methane, 99% pure.
  • Chronometer
  • Measuring scale, graduated in increments of at least 3 mm to measure the length of the coal.
  • Metal Hooks and Weights – Metal hooks and a variety of weights to produce a series of total charges to be used to determine char length.

SAMPLES

  • Take from the rolls at least one full-width piece of fabric that is 1 m [1 yd] long along the selvage (machine direction), after first removing a 1 m [1 yd] piece. ] length.
  • From each laboratory sample unit, cut five lengthwise and five widthwise test samples measuring 3.0 inches [76 mm] by 12 inches [300 mm].

PROCESS

  • Condition 24h at temperature and humidity according to ASTM D1776.
  • Assemble and flame expose each cylinder within 4 minutes of removal from the conditioning or storage area.
  • Hold the test sample between the two halves of the holder, with the bottom of the sample flush with the bottom of the holder.
  • Turn off hood ventilation.
  • Position the burner with the bottom half of the test specimen centered 0.75 in. [19 mm] above the burner.
  • Start the flame impact timer and expose the specimen for 12 ± 0.2 s. Observe whether the sample melts or drips during exposure to the flame.
  • Immediately after removing the flame, start a timer to measure the afterflame and afterglow time.
  • Observe how long the sample continues to burn after the exposure time of 12 s. Record the time after the flame with an accuracy of 0.2 s.
  • Note how long the sample continues to glow after the afterglow ceases or after the flame is removed if there is no afterglow. Record this afterglow time to the nearest 0.2 s.
  • Remove the sample holder from the test cabinet. Turn on the hood ventilation to clean the test cabinet for gases and smoke. Allow the sample to cool down.
  • Make a crease by folding the sample along a line through the peak of the highest charred area and parallel to the sides of the sample.
  • Pierce the specimen with the hook approximately 0.25 in. [6 mm] from the bottom edge and from the side edge of the specimen.
  • Attach a mass weight sufficient to give a combined mass of the weight with the hook that results in the proper tear force. Refer to Table 1 to determine the designated total tear strength for fabrics of different bases.
  • Apply the tear force as follows. Attach the corner of the swatch to the opposite bottom edge of the fabric from where the hook and weight are attached. Lift the sample up in a smooth, continuous motion until the sample supports the full tearing force. Note any fabric tears in the charred area of the sample. Mark the end of the tear with a line across the width of the fabric and perpendicular to the fold line.
  • Measure the char length along the undamaged edge of the sample to the nearest 3 mm [0.12 in].

CALCULATION

  • After-Flame Time: Calculate the average after-flame time for the longitudinal and transverse directions for each laboratory sample.
  • Postglow Time: Calculate the mean postglow time for the longitudinal and transverse directions of each laboratory sample.
  • Char Length: Calculate the average char length for the longitudinal and transverse directions for each laboratory sample.

REPORT

  • Time after the flame (individual and average).
  • Postglow time (individual and average).
  • Char length (individual and average).
  • Occurrence of melting or dripping, if any.

Per ASTM2112 requirements, this test is used to determine how easily fabrics ignite and how easily they continue to burn once ignited. To pass NFPA 2112, materials cannot have an average after-flame time greater than 2 seconds, a char length greater than 100 mm (4 in.), or dripping melt.
