INDUSTRIAL WASHING FOR THE TEST OF WORK CLOTHES

  • DEFINITION
  • INSTRUMENTS
  • TEST TUBES
  • WASHING PROCEDURE
  • DRYING PROCEDURE
  • CORRESPONDENCE WITH STANDARDS

DEFINITION

This International Standard specifies test procedures and equipment that can be used in the evaluation of cotton, polyester/cotton and reverse-blend workwear, which must be industrially laundered. They serve as the basis for testing relevant properties such as dimensional stability, color fastness, wrinkling and puckering at seams.

Since it is not possible to reproduce industrial washing processes, this standard aims to make an approximation

INSTRUMENTS

  • washer/extractor
Rotating horizontal drum with front or side loading opening.
  • rotary dryer
Rotary air evacuation dryer, with a system for detecting the rate of humidity of the air at the outlet, with a tolerance of 5%.
  • Finisher
    Batch-loaded steam locker.
  • ballast load
It consists of clean work clothes (lab coats, bibs and suspenders, overalls, pants and overalls) that have not been previously washed more than 100 times

In cases where the ballast material can have a significant influence on the test result, the entire ballast load should consist of the material of the test piece, for example in the test of contrasting colours, or of a multi-coloured material in textiles. .

  • Detergents:

with optical brightener

without optical brightener

  • bleaches

to chlorine

with hydrogen peroxide

  • Water quality: hardness ≤ 100mg/l CaCO3. pH: 6.0 to 7.5

TEST TUBES

The specimen must be a complete garment or a composite sample.

A minimum of three test pieces shall be subjected to the washing and drying/finishing programs specified in this International Standard. The real number of test pieces must be determined based on the objective of the tests of the matter.

The specimen is washed and dried using one of the procedures specified below. A cycle is a wash + a dry

WASHING PROCEDURE

DRYING PROCEDURE

Drum Drying

Full load (load ratio 1:25 to 1:35)
the outlet temperature being regulated so as not to exceed 90 ºC. The dryer is allowed to operate until the load is dry and drying is continued for a further 5 min with the heating (cooling) stopped. The load is dry when the final rate of humidity based on the conditioned specimens is 0  3%.

Tunnel drying

Place the specimens, with the appropriate hangers, in the preheated steam cabinet (5.3). The steam locker must be operated at full load and with at least one end ballast load. Finisher should be set to 155ºC air temperature and minimum 4 min run time

CORRESPONDENCE WITH STANDARDS

According to standards EN11612, EN11611, EN61482-1-2, EN15384, EN20471, a dimensional stability result of ±3% is required for woven fabrics in both directions and ±5% for knitted fabrics, after 5 wash cycles and measurement according to EN ISO 5077
