Protective clothing – Protection against flame – Limited flame spread materials, material assemblies and clothing. Equivalence with UNE-EN ISO 14116:20115 & ISO 14116:2015.

OBJECT

This standard sets out requirements for materials, material assemblies and protective clothing with limited flame spread properties, with the aim of reducing the possibility of clothing occasionally burning in contact with small flames and constituting a hazard. Additional requirements are also specified including design requirements, mechanical requirements, marking and information supplied by the manufacturer.

A classification system is provided for materials, sets of materials and garments that are tested according to ISO 15025 method A.

REQUIREMENTS

-The number of samples and the size of the materials and garments must be in accordance with the test procedures. The samples must be taken from the original garment or from the set of garments.

-Pre-treatment: Before all tests, the cleaning treatment must be carried out according to the manufacturer’s instructions. In the limited flame spread test, the test must be carried out before and after the pre-treatment. If the manufacturer does not indicate otherwise, 5 washing and drying cycles will be carried out.

-In the event that the garment undergoes a flame propagation maintenance process, the manufacturer must indicate the maximum number of washing and drying cycles before applying the treatment so that the garment maintains the performance.

-Conditioning: minimum 24 h at 20 ± 2 ºC with a relative humidity of 65 ± 5 %. The tests must be carried out under these conditions.

-The uncertainty of each trial must be taken into account when giving the final result.

Application called 10” perpendicular to the fabric.

Index 1:

The lower part of the flame or hole is not allowed to reach the upper edge, no ignited debris must be released, embers must not spread from the charred part to the unaffected areas after the cessation of the flames. Post incandescence outside the charred area and without combustion ≤ 2 s.

Table of Contents 2:

GARMENTS

  • DESIGN REQUIREMENTS

    -For single-layer garments with materials with index 1 of limited flame spread, they must be worn over garments with index 2 or 3 and may not be in contact with the skin (e.g. on the neck or wrist). If any set contains materials with index 1, they must not be in contact with the skin.

    -It must be visually verified when the garment is worn by the user.

    -A protective garment must consist of several separate garments or it can be a single garment with one or more layers.

    General requirements that are not covered in this standard must be in accordance with ISO 13688.

    -The hardware that runs through the outer material of the garment or set of garments must not be exposed to the innermost surface of the garment or set of garments. This conformity will be verified visually.

    A two-piece set of appropriate size for the wearer should overlap between the jacket and pants which remain standing with the wearer extended above the head and then bend over until the fingertips touch the ground. In addition, the wrists and forearms should remain covered in an upright position. This also applies to one-piece suits.

-Indicate whether it is a single-layer or multi-layer garment.

-Garments cannot be marked with any pictogram or symbol of protection from heat and flame if other Regulations that accredit this protection are not complied with.
