INTRODUCTION

This standard describes a test method for the determination of limited flame propagation, in textile materials and industrial products, in the form of a single or multi-component layer (coated, padded, multilayer, sandwich type or similar combinations), vertically oriented, when they are subjected to the action of a small flame.

DEFINITIONS

  • Flame application time
  • Incandescence: Persistence of incandescence in a material, under the specified test conditions, after the flame has been extinguished.
  • After-glow time: Duration of incandescence
  • Carbonization
  • Waste: Material that separates from the sample during the test.
  • remains inflamed
  • Hole: Break, in the test sample, of at least 5 mm in any dimension, with a continuous perimeter caused by melting, incandescence or inflammation.

APPLIANCES

  • Frame Support
  • Propane gas burner of 95% purity min.
  • Sample support
  • Support punches
  • Spacers
  • Template
  • Stopwatches
  • Filter paper

SAMPLE

  • The sample with the longest dimension is oriented in the direction of the warp and in the direction of the weft.
  • For surface ignition, when the two sample surfaces are visually different and preliminary tests indicate different flammability characteristics, each surface shall be tested using a batch of six samples.
  • Dimensions of test samples. Samples are cut with dimensions of (200 ± 2) mm x (160 ± 2) mm for Method A. For Method B, 200 x 80 mm ± 2.
  • Multilayer samples. When samples are composed of multiple layers or materials that are not continuous over the entire sample, the material with the smallest dimension is placed flush with the bottom edge of the sample, consistent with the use of protective clothing, including the form of attachment and orientation.
  • Conditioning of test samples
  • temperature of (20 ± 2) ºC and a relative humidity of (65 ± 5) % for at least 24 h.

PROCEDURES

PROCEDURE A – Superficial Ignition

  • Assembly of the test sample.
  • Work position of the burner. The burner is placed perpendicular to the sample surface, so that the axis of the burner is 20 mm above the line joining the lower punches and is aligned with the vertical midline of the sample surface. It shall be verified that the end of the lighter stabilizer is (17 ± 1) mm from the surface of the test sample.
  • Flame adjustment – Horizontal range. The horizontal reach of the flame is adjusted to (25 ± 2) mm,
  • Positioning of the flame.

PROCEDURE B- Ignition at the edge

  • Assembly of the test sample
  • Work position of the burner. The burner is placed in front of, but below, the test sample so that it is aligned with a plane passing through the vertical midline of the surface of the sample and perpendicular to its surface, with the longitudinal axis forming an angle of 30°. upwards with the lower edge of the test sample. Check that the end of the lighter stabilizer is (20 ± 1) mm from the lower edge of the test sample
  • Flame adjustment – Vertical range.
  • The height of the flame is adjusted to (40 ± 2) mm
  • The burner is moved from the rest position to the inclined working position.

TESTS

TEST Superficial ignition

  1. The flame is applied for 10s and it is observed:
  2. if the flame reaches the top edge or any vertical edge of the test specimen.
  3. the post-combustion time.
  4. if the afterglow extends beyond the inflamed area (usually the charred area), reaching the undamaged area.
  5. the afterglow time.
  6. detachment of residues.
  7. whether the debris ignites the filter paper (ignited debris), if applicable.
  8. if a hole is formed and in which layer it is formed, in the case of multilayer samples.

TEST Edge ignition

The flame is applied for 10 s and the behavior is observed and recorded, as indicated in the previous section (Superficial ignition). 5 samples are repeated.

According to EN11612 and EN11611 regulations, fabrics that comply with surface ignition are classified with A1 and fabrics that comply with edge ignition with A2.
